Extended Study

These tests can be used in addition to any of our DNA tests when the circumstances call for a more in depth test than what is usually required.

Our DNA tests analyse 16 genetic locations – this is the GOLD standard for these tests.

However, it is small possibility that in certain scenarios an inconclusive result may be given.

Examples of these scenarios are:

Paternity Analysis – The two alleged fathers in a case are full Siblings. If only ONE alleged father is tested and the analysis demonstrates ONE mismatch in the sixteen, a further study will be required to establish whether this mismatch is due to mutation or because the other brother is the true biological father. The same can be applied to potential mothers in a Maternity test if they are full biological sisters

This is rare but must be considered in these unusual situations.

Sibling/Grandparent Analysis – As explained on the individual test pages, the fewer test participants, the more likely these tests will yield inconclusive results. It is still a relatively rare occurrence but to achieve the most definitive answer possible in certain circumstances e.g. half Sibling test with no known parent, it would be recommended.

What does this test do?

This test will analyse a further 4 genetic locations. So the result will then be based on 20 genetic locations instead of 16. This increases statistical strength vastly.

Please Note: The DNA stored in the laboratories will be used for the extended study. There will be no need for Clients to revisit the clinic or be sent reswabs!!

The likelihood of another inconclusive result at this stage is virtually NIL for any of the above tests in any scenario. In the extremely unlikely event that this should happen, there is a further extended test that is capable of analysing a further 14 genetic locations. However, this is a very costly test and you should ring and discuss this with a scientific advisor, should the event ever arise.

Options and cost!

The cost of the extended study includes the first 3 people in a test. Further individuals will be charged at the additional persons rate.

If your case has a raised likelihood of an inconclusive result, you will be informed of this so that you are aware of all facts. In some cases it may be possible to involve more people in a test and thus improve the chance of conclusive results. This can be discussed with a scientist on 0800 032 5945

If further participants are not available, you can choose from the following:

  • Proceed with the standard test and see what the intial result is. Afterall it may be fine.
  • Order the extended study straight away to avoid the delays caused by retesting.

Protocal for extended study.

Inconclusive Standard test: If you opt to try the standard test first and receives an inconclusive result, you will be contacted directly by a scientist to explain the outcome and how much information can be taken from that initial test.

If you decide to order the extended study, the fee for the test should be forwarded directly to the laboratory. Once received the test will be performed.

This test will take a further 7 – 9 working days.

Clinic ordered Extended Study: If a Client decides to order the extended study straight away to avoid possible delays, then the cost of the extended study will be added to the cost of the test being undertaken.

Remember the cost of an extended study includes the first 3 people in a case. Additional people will be charged at the additional persons rate. All initial participants need to take part in the extended study for it to be effective.
