The samples we use for DNA tests

MOUTH (BUCCAL) SWAB is the method which we recommended for obtaining DNA. It is quick, reliable & painless. A specially designed swab is rubbed against the inside of the mouth to obtain cheek cells, from which DNA can be extracted.
When visiting your local DNA clinic or using a Home Testing Kit this will be the method used.
DNA can also be extracted from the following forensic sources:
  • Coronal/Hospital samples
  • Amniotic/Chorionic villus fluid
  • Semen or blood stains
  • Toothbrush
  • Bottle/cup rim
  • Cigarette ends
  • Chewing gum
  • Hair (must have 6 hairs with root intact)

The laboratory will only guarantee a complete DNA profile when their validated mouth swabs have been used to obtain DNA.

The viability of forensic samples or other swabs can not be guaranteed.

A viability test must be performed on most forensic samples. Please click here for more information.

If you wish to use a forensic or other sample please click here to contact us and speak with a qualified scientist for advice.
